Reflecting on the first time driving the GreenPower bus, he said, “I drove it and I’m like this is the best driving vehicle I’ve ever had. “Things are going very well with the electric buses,” said WWPS Transportation Director John Griffith. “They’re saving the taxpayers about $500 each month through the difference between diesel and electric costs — even through the wintertime.”

That difference includes major cost savings — each electric school bus saves the school district about $400 per operational month.

“When you multiply that by 15 buses, that’s $50,000 a year we can spend on other things, or that can help offset the cost of future electric buses if we’re able to secure more grant funding,” said Smith.

“These buses are very dependable and have run every single day,” she said. “And if there’s a problem that the district’s mechanics can’t fix, the bus or charger manufacturers will send someone out.”

School officials said even in cold weather, the electric buses work great, despite some common misconceptions. 

“It gets pretty darn cold in Walla Walla, and we’ve had no problems running our fleet during the wintertime,” said Wade Smith, superintendent of public instruction for Walla Walla Public Schools. “In fact,” Smith said, “the electric buses have better all-around traction because the battery pack is in the middle of the bus, as opposed to an engine in the front or rear of a diesel-powered bus.”

“They work well. Our bus drivers absolutely love them, our kids love them,” added Smith. “Very rarely do you come across this win-win-win scenario that you have right now with the electric fleets.”

“When Washington’s first electric school bus entered service back in 2019, no one was sure how it would perform,” Watson said. “Five years later, these electric buses have demonstrated that they can deliver the same level of service that school districts get from diesel buses – without the noise or pollution.”

“Our drivers and students both love the electric buses because they offer a much cleaner and quieter ride,” said Nancy Brown, transportation director for Everett Public Schools. “These buses are beneficial on special needs routes with some of our most vulnerable and noise sensitive students.”

Rosemary Burzynski drives the EV bus and says she never wants to go back to a diesel. “I love it. It’s a smooth ride. And honestly, it’s better for the environment. When you go on over the roads. It’s not as bumpy as the other buses. And the kids just love it.”

“I was apprehensive at first…open minded but a little bit nervous. I told (Transportation Manager) David (Kinzer) yesterday that can be chalked up to human nature and not embracing change but one route and I was hooked on it. It’s got a good, solid feel. There’s a little bit of a hesitation when you take off and a different feel to the brakes but that’s just getting used to it which doesn’t take very long at all,” said Hessler. “I’ve got no complaints.”

As a concluding message to school districts exploring a path to electric buses, Furby advised that they “definitely embrace it.”

“From their preliminary experience, they have seen cost savings in excess of $5,000 annually in general maintenance and fuel costs per bus… Even while running the heaters, which are known to draw down the battery, buses were returning with more than half of their range.” Electric School Bus Success in Rural Virginia: Louisa County Public Schools

“When you’re on the bus ramp with the buses running and the pollution that diesel buses are emitting, it’s quite high,” said Edwards. “And, even in the winter when the windows are up and the doors are closed, they tested it inside the buses, and it actually leaches inside the buses, too.” But, Edwards noted that what kids really enjoy about these new buses is how quiet they are, which is a top priority for to them.

“We’re seeing about a 20% to 30% reduction in operating cost on electric vehicles versus our fossil-fuel school buses,” said Matthews. “This is primarily driven by lower cost of fuel, lower liquid changes like motor oils, engine cooling, those types of issues, and less wear and tear on brakes.”

“In addition to the positive environmental impacts of electric transportation, the financial return on investment can’t be understated. These new buses will allow us to save funds that can be allocated toward teaching and instruction,” said LCS deputy Superintendent of Operations and Strategic Planning Reid Wodicka.

“The biggest things for me as a parent are air pollution and air quality,” said LCS parent Erik Nygaard. “Putting little kids with sensitive lungs next to diesel engines emitting harsh fumes isn’t great for their health. Electric vehicles use cleaner technology and will have a positive impact on students.”

Along with high fuel costs, Cauthen said the district will save 80% of its current costs. Each bus will save them $10,000 per year. “That’s dollars that I’m not having to take out educating kids every day. That goes right back to the students and their education.”

“Kimbrough calculated that the electricity costs of running the buses would be about 70% less than the diesel fuel costs. He anticipates added savings in maintenance costs.

What I can save in diesel and maintenance, I can almost hire a teacher, or an instructional aid, or give some other benefit to my teachers,” Kimbraugh said. “The cost savings are going to let me better support my kids.”

“We can’t wait to get those buses in and put in the order and to be able to show them off throughout our community so that they know that we are partnering with our city to make sure that Cedar Hill continues to be a beautiful place to live and work,” Tierney Tinnin, a spokesperson for Cedar Hill ISD, told KERA News in an interview Monday.

SISD is also introducing new electric school busses, to contribute a cleaner environment for the region, according to the district.

Chaffin recounted what a driver operating one of the district’s electric buses told him at a recent meeting. “He said it’s the first year in 15 years that he went home [after work] and didn’t have a headache from the diesel fumes. That’s a huge difference — and if that’s a difference for the driver, what’s the difference for the students?”

“The EV buses have positively impacted our bus fleet,” Teresa Fleming, deputy chief operations officer for the School District of Philadelphia, said in a release. “Our bus chauffeurs have embraced their deployment into our fleet, and have said the EV buses are great. They provide a comfortable and quiet ride for staff and students.”

“My asthma will get better!” Bella exclaimed after she walked off of the bus. That’s because this bus runs on electricity rather than gas or diesel, meaning it will not release harmful fumes into the air as children ride it around the city.

Carnes said electric buses are so quiet, the driver can hear a student’s conversation in the very back seat of the bus.

“When the kids get to school, they’re less rambunctious because they’re not yelling and screaming over top of one another the whole ride to school,” he said. “You have the benefit of cleaner air for the kids to breathe but then also, on the emotional side of things, kids are calmer.”

“The electric buses that are behind us are more than just a mode of transportation. They represent a step forward for a greener Scranton, and they promote the health of our students and the greater community,” said Erin Keating, district superintendent. “As we move forward with this very exciting initiative, I want us all to embrace this change as an opportunity to educate our students about sustainability and innovation and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.”

“First and foremost you’re reducing the carbon footprint number one, number two the buses are newer any time you get newer safer equipment to put our children on that are being put on the roads here that’s always a benefit and a tremendous plus,” Scranton School Board President Ty Holmes said.

“There’s no noise there’s no fumes there’s no smoke or anything that’s associated with diesel engines so I think it’s a benefit to everyone in the community,” said Rich Tarapchak with Rohrer Enterprises Inc.

She showed how when she takes her foot off the accelerator, the bus slows significantly more before she has to tap the brakes than would be the case with other buses.

“The engine’s doing a lot of the braking for us,” she said. “So there’s minimal use of the brakes.”

Looking at the total cost per mile, Beaver said his district’s cost is $1.06 per mile to operate a diesel bus, 72 cents per mile for a propane bus, and 56 cents per mile to operate an electric vehicle

“Well, I’m in love with the buses so far,” said John Wiles, transportation director at Shawnee Public Schools, on the Citizen Potawatomi Nation’s tribal lands in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

“Of course they’ve had their little nicks and problems. I think any bus that we get brand new has glitches from the factory … but once those were repaired, the buses have been doing excellent.”

“All of the bus drivers have really praised these new buses,” said Lone Grove Superintendent Meri Jayne Miller. “They’ve been very pleased with the way that they handle. So far, it has been a really good asset to our district.”

“In the short time the buses have been in service, they’ve been driven 5,600 miles and saved the district more than $2,200 in fossil fuel expenses. “Every driver said it seems like the kids are quieter, just because they’re not screaming over the noise of the bus,” said transportation director James Ketchum.

“If the school stages the charging as recommended, GPS has the capacity to save about $15,000 annually in operation costs.

“EV buses accomplish the same goal of getting the kids to school safely but in an even better way—no diesel fumes exposure, higher fuel savings and a quieter ride for everyone, “ Morgan says. “It’s a win-win.”

The Amanda-Clearcreek school district is expecting “significant financial benefits from diesel fuel savings and lower maintenance costs, including estimated annual savings of $47,416 ($23,708 per bus).”

“The air will be cleaner for our students but also, you know, the noise factor whenever the students are riding the bus as well,” Edwards said. “So talking about it with the Transportation Director, there’s a few bus drivers that are excited to possibly have the opportunity to drive these buses as compared to the diesel buses.”

“We’re estimated to save about $47,000 a year between the two buses for maintenance and fuel cost,” Edwards said. “Essentially, whenever we did the analysis, a large portion of it was a financial decision.”

“It’s reliable,” Ray Ratcliffe, Shaker’s assistant transportation supervisor, said. “It’s significantly reducing fuel and maintenance costs.

“CBC’s fuel cost per diesel bus is typically between $700 and $900 per month. Fuel costs for the electric bus, on the other hand, were around $400 for the first month of operation.”

“According to Tiger, the 5th graders “loved it,” noting how quiet it was and observing the lack of exhaust as students used handheld particulate matter sensors to measure air quality differences between the diesel and electric buses. Equipped with new knowledge, the 5th grade students presented the information to a class of pre-kindergarten students, who then made drawings of the electric bus to give to attendees at a dedication ceremony.”

“We’re not saying it’s a fix-all for what our environment is going through. But we know that this is better locally, and it’s better for the kids. It provides a healthier riding environment to and from school,” she said. “That’s what’s important.”

“Maureen Joy Charter School in Durham, North Carolina recently replaced 10 diesel buses with battery-powered ones. Samantha Amaral, the senior director of people and finance at the school, says attendance has improved since the electric buses were acquired last fall.

“A healthy child’s going to come to school,” Amaral said.”

“Those buses, obviously being on wheels and having big batteries, they could go in an emergency situation like we just had with Hurricane Helene and could move to community centers or fire stations and provide power instantaneously because they are like big generators,” he said.

“Eileen Hahn started driving Lake Shore Central buses this school year. She said the electric buses, which look like the diesel ones from the outside, have better pickup than diesel coaches, some of the buttons are different, and the buses are quieter. 

“It’s extremely quiet, which I think also helps the children to be quiet because they can talk, rather than yell to each other,” she said.”

With the redistribution of weight, Raymond said driving the electric buses is “a completely different animal.”

“The response is immediate, breaking and acceleration,” he said. “The bus still turns and handles (similarly). The acceleration is, for a school bus, unheard of.”

“Yeah, it’s got some pep,” Luthringer added.

“West Grand School District calculated $3,633 in fuel savings and $1,796 in maintenance savings during the year it incorporated one electric bus into its fleet.”

“Raphael has been impressed by how comfortable the cabin temperature is even on the coldest days. She observes, “you almost get instant heat in an ESB” whereas diesel-burning school buses “take a while for the heater to rev up and make the cabin comfortable.””

“Oddi estimates that a route operated by a diesel-burning school bus would cost about $22, while an equivalent route operated by an ESB would cost less than $4, delivering approximately $15,000 of cost savings per school bus each year.”

Hunter has driven regular diesel buses, tractors, and big trucks, but the electric bus is his choice.

“The smoother ride, the quieter ride, I prefer it,” Hunter said.

“Nevada’s Clark County district, which operates the nation’s largest owned-and-operated school bus fleet, with nearly 2,000 buses serving 125,000 students, has just unveiled its first electric model. Just one bus is estimated to save $60 a day in fuel costs—scale that to the whole fleet, and the district could save nearly $120,000 per day.”

Yacub said the electric models, which take about two hours to charge fully, have the same capacity as their diesel counterparts but require less maintenance. Though the buses cost double or triple that of diesel, he said they will ultimately save money on fuel costs.

“Walker said the electric school bus only uses roughly $4 a day in electricity compared to $20 a day in diesel for a regular school bus.”

“They do very well,” Woody Woodwick, the Service Attendant for Havre Public Schools said, “They stay warm, and they have a great traction control system, so they’re very surefooted on the ice.”

“The diesel buses are going down the road for about $0.56 a mile,” Woodwick said, “Our gasoline buses are close to $0.80 a mile. And these are about $0.23 a mile.”

“Even with charging, the electric buses’ per mile cost is half the cost of regular gas engines and a quarter of the cost for diesel. A year in, he said the buses run great — sometimes even better than their diesel and gas counterparts.”

“There were a lot of people that said you couldn’t run electrics up in Montana, so that was somewhat of a challenge. And it looks like we’ve been proving the simple fact is ‘yes, we can,’” Woodwick said.

“The drivers like them a lot,” Woodwick said on the phone with EBS. “They are exceptionally quiet. You can hear the kids talk about you. There’s no oil changes. There’s no transmission flushes … They’re pretty maintenance-free.”

“Almost two years after transitioning to electric buses, Woodwick reported savings that sliced per-mile costs in half compared to diesel, better mechanic operations like doors opening and closing in subzero temperatures and a perk for drivers: a remote start so that drivers arrive to pre-warmed buses in the mornings and afternoons.”

“This was a grassroots effort by a group of students partnering with Lizzie and Big Sky SNO,” Shipman told EBS. “What always sticks with me about kids and students who really go after something is their passion and their awareness around how to make their community, first of all, and the world a better place.”

“As far as how they drive and getting around in snow conditions that has not been a problem. In fact, Wilson said the weight of the bus is more evenly distributed making it blow right through snow.”

“Wilson said the school system’s projected savings will be between $60,000 to $80,000 a year.”

“Our district’s diesel fuel costs are tremendous,” said Heath Oates, superintendent of western Missouri’s El Dorado Springs R-II School District, in an interview with the Daily Yonder. “My initial estimates show we’re going to save around $200,000 a year, which is the cost of four beginning teachers with benefits.”

“According to Knox’s public data tracker, the electric bus alone has avoided almost 24,380 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions — equivalent to planting 286 trees growing for 10 years — and saved over $1,300 as of early November 2021, or nearly $1,600 when including the savings from solar panels.”

“This truly is a game changer for our students, bus drivers and our entire community,” said Chris Kilbride, Ritenour School District superintendent. “Not only will our students and drivers have a more comfortable, quieter ride, but since there are zero emissions, our buses will be healthier for our entire community. This cost-effective fleet is one more way we are showing our students and families that we value their health and are good stewards of our environment.”

“Based on similar districts, Worth County expects to save about $33,000 per year over the next 5-12 years that the electric buses are expected to remain in operation.”

“No oil changes and, essentially, just brakes and tires are the only maintenance that you have to do regularly on these things. Then, the cost of electricity, right now, anyway is way less than the cost of diesel. Plus, the time and energy that you have to put into actually filling the diesel buses,” he said.

According to district superintendent Brad Steward, the switch will save the school up to $18,000 annually.

“This has been a great learning experience and an exciting opportunity and an exciting thing for the Eldorado Springs R-II school district,” he said.

“We’ve saved twenty-four hundred gallons of diesel fuel and the associated carbon emissions and my lungs,” bus driver Andrew Keblinsky said. “So I like it. I like that bus.”

“Greater efficiency means the school district’s operational expenses for the bus decreased 51 percent, saving 999 gallons of diesel fuel over the school year. The electric drivetrain also had no issues, another factor in significantly lower direct maintenance costs than the diesel buses in the fleet to which it was compared. The report concluded that electric buses will likely be a beneficial technology for other rural Maine schools.”

When Scott Lawyerson, the Head of Maintenance and Head Bus Driver at MSAD 13, was asked to describe experience with the district’s new electric school bus in one word he said “dependable.”

“I think a lot of people have warmed up to it,” Scott said as we cruised quietly from Bingham to Moscow. “It runs well every day, and the kids love it.” The bus’s lightning bolt emblems and blue highlights differentiate it from the rest of the fleet, and we got several waves as we passed locals on a bluebird day. “It handles well, and the heating system is awesome, works great,” Scott added.

“Wow, as a bus driver for 39 years, I LOVE it now…If someone put me back in a diesel bus, I would quit.”

“I’m out in the country and have to back into the driveways, but I’ve had no trouble navigating them with the electric bus. We haven’t encountered any problems in the winter, even with colder temperatures and if it’s zero degrees in the morning. The only thing cold weather impacts is the range and that it takes longer to charge.”

“It took some time for her to get used to the change, but Cates now says the experience has been a positive one.

“I like the room, it’s wider, and it really rides like a Cadillac, and it’s really quiet,” Cates said.”

“It is working well in a very rural, small district,” Sandra MacArthur, MSAD 13’s superintendent said. “We have 150 students, pre-k through 12, we are very small, and it works really well for us.”

For Cates, the impact of the new bus on students has been the best part. 

“It’s good, it’s comfortable for them, they’re happy,” she said. “That’s all that matters—happy and safe.”

“Look,” said Alan Fontenot, the Transportation Director for RPSB, “We want to be on the cutting edge of what students in Rapides Parish get to experience.”

“So far, that cold hasn’t affected the battery performance. As for the cost, the electric bills for the bus have been averaging $432 a month. He said that’s about two weeks worth of running with a diesel bus.”

“Our feedback from everybody that has experienced them love it. Our bus drivers love it, our kids riding the buses love it, they’re brand-new buses, they have the new smell. Just like anything else it’s a new toy, you have to realize these are replacing models of buses that are ten to twelve to fifteen years old,” said Green.

“You don’t have the exhaust fumes. You don’t have the noise of a diesel bus. Because the buses are so much quieter, the children are much quieter,” Moran says.

“Operating an electric bus is a way of modeling environmental sustainability to students,” says Kenny Bell, the district’s superintendent.

“All of those savings and future savings are going to go back into the education of our students,” Green says.”

“In addition to its five buses, the district expects two more buses soon and 17 more coming by the end of the year. Moran says with fuel cost savings, she hopes to pay her drivers a better wage and replace the district’s bus garage, which sits in a flood plain.”

“There is a learning curve to driving the electric buses, but within a few days of driving them, our drivers say they love them,” Moran says. “We feel like the buses put Fleming County Schools on the map and it’s a health and safety improvement for our children.”

Electric buses will save taxpayers a lot of money, says Wolfe County’s Transportation Director John Halsey. His research shows an average diesel bus costs about $350 to fill up and gets about 8 miles to the gallon. It costs $20 to charge the system’s electric bus, which can go 138 miles on a single charge.

“The Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition agreed, reporting school districts opting to use electric buses can realize up to 60% savings in maintenance costs and up to 80% savings on fuel costs. In May, Fleming County’s first month of operation with their five buses, Moran says the district’s diesel bill dropped by $7,000.”

“Beyond the maintenance costs, the district was spending thousands of dollars on diesel fuel, at a rate of approximately $0.60 per mile. Now, with their new electric school buses, they pay just $0.12 per mile for energy, an 80% per mile cost savings.”

“Today, Fleming County Schools has seven electric school buses on the road with 17 more on the way, and they’re already seeing major cost savings. Initial projections show monthly fuel savings of $12,000, and that figure will increase to $17,000 as more electric school buses are deployed.”

“In fact, Moran notes that their electric school buses “run twice before we need them charged” and “take a hill a whole lot better than a diesel bus.”

Not only do the electric school buses offer a quieter and smoother ride for passengers, but Creasman notes the safer and more enjoyable bus dismissal process, saying that “it’s nice not getting exhaust blown in my face.”

“So far, the drivers said they come back with a 75% charge following their bus routes, hills have not been a problem. And it’s diesel buses that pose a challenge in the cold, winter months, said Hinkle. These electric ones are stored and charged inside. 

“It’s exciting. We feel like we’re setting a trend,” said Ridder. “And the reality is that electric buses are here to stay.””

“Dicks’ school district got an electric bus in December through the EPA grant. He subbed for a driver on the bus recently and said the kids are especially excited about how quiet the bus is. “Miller said the electric bus has been more cost-effective than the district’s diesel buses. A normal diesel bus costs the district an average of 75 cents per mile to operate, but the electric bus only costs between 30 and 40 cents per mile.”

“The first bus ran 46 days straight, going 1,928 miles. “We saved 275 gallons of diesel fuel in 46 days, and avoided 6.5 tons of carbon dioxide,” Oliver reported. “And that’s just the first one.””

It has cost $2.38 in electricity each day per bus, compared to $17 to $18 a day for the diesel buses, he said.

Oliver said his drivers love the buses, and they’ve noticed an unexpected benefit: the centralized weight means they handle better than diesel buses on snow and ice.

“It was an easy decision for us because we have some older buses in our fleet, some of which are near the end of their life cycles,” said Mike Bishop, Perry Central’s transportation director. “Buses are a big expense, so this was a windfall for us.”

Applying for the EPA rebate was a way to improve the school bus fleet without placing a heavy burden on taxpayers or the corporation, according to superintendent Tara Bishop. She told Inside Indiana Business that Perry Central is a small school district with a limited tax base.

“It all comes back to the finances. It reduces our overall cost to put buses on the road,” Mike Bishop said. “The buses also come with a 10-year battery and drive motor warranty. That was a bit of security as well in making the investment in them.”

“They’ve been extremely reliable,” said Farquer. “We’ve had, I believe, five events that have disrupted routes. And we’ve probably ran 150 routes so far. You know, so far, so over a 99% success rate. Which we feel pretty good about.”

“Despite frequent sub-freezing temperatures in the winter months, Farquer says Williamsfield’s ESBs have performed flawlessly in cold weather and have even outperformed diesel-burning school buses from neighboring districts.”

Transitioning to ESBs has resulted in significant cost savings for the district, as Farquer estimates that electricity for ESBs is 94% cheaper than diesel, delivering $6,500 in annual savings per school bus.

“I’d be lying if those traditional fuel buses don’t pull up, and some of them are riding in the cloud of smoke,” Horak said. “You can tell that the kids, you know, when they’re getting on there, that look on their face, like, man, the smell of the exhaust … And so hopefully, that cleaner ride has a residual impact on their health and mental acuity walking in the door.”

“All of our students will benefit from this,” District 157 Superintendent Dwayne Evans said. “The world is changing; we will no longer have carbon driven buses in our students’ lifetimes.”

“Herscher’s electric fleet of 25 buses will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote green energy throughout Kankakee County,” said Carlee Hove, a student in Herscher High School’s Environmental Action Club. “Our district is quickly becoming the leader in the use of sustainable energy, not only in the state of Illinois, but in the entire Midwest.”

“Our children deserve to breathe cleaner air, and today, we are taking a giant step in that direction,” Sullivan said. “Let this be a reminder of what we can be if we work together toward a sustainable future.”

“Sixth-grade student Lincoln Walters wrote a letter to the president a few years ago, helping the school get the funds for the electric fleet. 

“It feels awesome because it helps create a change in this world,” he said.”

Meanwhile, the bus hummed in near-silence as driver Susan Wilson sat at the helm.

“It’s quieter. It’s more stable because it’s newer. I think it’s more efficient,” Wilson said. “I personally love it. Love, love, love.”

The ride is comfortable, the noise is minimal and the air in the bus smells fresh, with no hint of exhaust.

“I love driving it,” said Hadley, 74, who has been driving buses for 20 years, in a career that has included ferrying the Seattle Mariners’ Single-A team.

Detractors often raise questions about cold weather performance, but former Williamsfield schools Superintendent Tim Farquer said that during cold stretches last winter, some neighboring districts experienced issues with their diesel bus engines “gumming up,” while Williamsfield’s electric buses ran without problems.

Decman recalled that on one extremely cold day, his district’s diesel buses experienced problems with their fuel thickening and those buses didn’t run, but the electric buses did.

Cost estimates vary, but Pingrey said transitioning to the new electric buses could decrease the cost of running a bus from about 50 cents per mile under the diesel fleet to 8 cents per mile under the new electric fleet.

“It drives smooth like a Cadillac,” Georgia Bus Driver Deirdra McMullen said, “It’s just easy.”

“Operationally, Burch has noticed that electric buses are easier to maintain, with fewer moving parts than diesel engines, and there is no need to refuel throughout the day. He finds the pre- and post-trip checks are nearly identical but without concerns about fuel levels or emissions. Plus, the electric bus drives almost effortlessly.”

“Oh, it’s smooth,” Burch said, likening the experience to driving a “big electric golf cart.” The learning curve is minor: his main adjustments are monitoring battery levels on longer routes and adjusting to the feel of a steady, almost silent engine. “It’s second nature now,” he explained.

“Students notice more than just quieter rides and cleaner air. The electric bus is more comfortable, offering extra legroom and seat capacity. Burch said students are excited by the change from the diesel buses they’ve known.” 

“Oh, they love it,” Burch said. “If I have to put this in the shop or something, then they get upset because they got to ride on the gas bus. It’s comfortable for them.”

“Electric buses should lower maintenance costs for the district. And they do not emit tailpipe pollution and particulate matter that can harm people’s health.

Santos: “I’m thrilled about having students breathing the cleanest air on their way to school and away from school.”

“When these electric buses hit Broward County roads in the 2023/24 school year, our District will be operating the largest fleet of electric buses in the state and, most significantly, taking an important step toward providing a healthier environment for all of us,” said BCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Earlean Smiley.

“The buses have been on the road for over a week now and we haven’t heard anything but positive comments on these buses,” said Superintendent Mike Thomas.”

“Transportation director P.J. Hope said the quieter, cooler buses have already helped lift the moods of drivers and riders alike, reducing behavior issues. 

“It’s something new, as if it was a Christmas gift,” Hope said in a speech.”

“These kids are the lifeblood of our county,” said two-term County Commissioner Jody Stephenson. His father was a commissioner for 32 years and his grandma drove a school bus. He used to get a headache and feel sick when he rode them growing up. 

“Our kids will get a better education because they will feel good when they get to school.” Stephenson said. He couldn’t remember ever seeing a new bus in Dixie County.

“If you look at it wide-eyed, it’s the way of the future,” said Shane Seachwell, the district’s director of transportation services. “A few years ago, many people could not conceptualize buses as large as this one powered by electric. Palm Beach looked around and wanted to remain on the cutting edge, so we stepped into the future.”

But Searchwell said the district is happy to have taken this initial step.

“We’re embracing change, and we’re charging forward,” he said.

“Farmers were the first environmentalists,” Dr. Barfield said. “We recognize that in order to have good crops, we must have clean air.”

“Thomas has even begun imagining their role in disaster response. After a hurricane, the buses could be deployed as mobile cooling stations, allowing the community to charge phones, access WiFi, and contact insurance companies or FEMA while cooling off. “It’s pretty crazy what could actually come out of this, and that’s entirely to the right of their original purpose,” Thomas said. “You could not do that with a diesel bus.”

“It was an absolute blessing on this community to be able to get these buses,” Thomas said. “Their kids are riding around on brand new, air-conditioned buses, and that’s got to be worth something.”

So far, the findings have been positive, Leach said. E-1 has never been in the shop and has had little wear and tear on its brakes because the bus regenerates itself when slowing down, Leach said. He estimates an 80-90% reduction in parts and maintenance fees… Leach concedes the upfront price for electric buses can be a challenge, but initial studies suggest costs will break even within six to 10 years. Grants ease or even eliminate the added financial burden.

The e-bus hasn’t had a single issue during its three years on the road so far, according to Aurin. “It has been a superstar in our fleet,” she said.

“Kremmling is known as one of the coldest places in the state, where morning temperatures in the winter range between 30 below zero and 5 degrees, but despite those cold temps have been using an electric school bus since 2020.

“Most of the winter it’s 30 to 35 below, when it’s up to 20 below that’s good day and it’s performed extremely well,” Aurin said.”

Not only do bus drivers say the electric bus does well in the winter, but they say it’s the best bus in their fleet with a much lower operating cost than diesel buses.

“It averages 26 cents per mile and the diesel buses, just for fuel not including oil changes, filters, lubes, is 58 cents per mile,” Aurin said.

“What we are seeing is that these buses are doing great in cold weather they still maintain a battery charge even when it’s cold,” Becker said.

“I also like the actual power that the buses have as far as acceleration comparative to a diesel. We’re obviously not trying to drag race people, but they have much more get up and go, so we’re more able to safely merge into traffic, and they’re quieter so that the driver is able to more effectively communicate to the students on the bus, and then also be able to hear more of that drive scene around them versus having the clank of a diesel engine.”

 “Our first thought was, ‘There’s no way an electric bus can be successful in the mountains,’” Peppard said. “We were concerned about the ability of the bus to have power, to have torque — to really do what our buses need to do. As it turns out, this bus actually has three times the torque of any diesel bus in our fleet.”

Aurin shared that the fuel cost per mile for the electric bus is 26 cents. Meanwhile, the fuel cost per mile for a diesel bus sits around 58 cents.

“The electric school bus has great torque and performs well in cold weather climates, like the one that we experience around Granby and Grand Lake (Colorado), where the headquarters of Mountain Parks are located,” said Chris Michalowski, Mountain Park Electric’s energy manager. “Surprisingly, the bus works in the steep mountain passes much better than a traditional diesel bus, which has prompted the school district to ask us to help them fund more electric school buses.”

“Replacing polluting diesel school buses with clean electric ones helps address equity and economic disparities for our lower-income students in the rural areas that the co-op serves,” said May.

“That’s because the West Grand School District is finding that in the frigid winter temps of -30°F, their electric buses outperformed their diesel-powered ones, both in running costs and reliability.”

“It averages 26 cents per mile and the diesel buses, just for fuel not including oil changes, filters, lubes, is 58 cents per mile,” said West Grand County School District Director of Transportation, Bethany Aurin.

“Cartwright Elementary School District’s Chief Financial Officer Victoria Farrar said she wants to expand the district’s fleet of electric school buses… She emphasized the importance of reducing pollution, speaking “as a person who has asthma who grew up in Arizona, my children who have asthma who are growing up here now.”

‘“My eighth-grader has asthma, and she has benefited more from the electric bus,” said Elba Sánchez, a parent volunteer at Justine Spitalny Elementary School in Maryvale. “She had very constant asthma attacks, and now she even forgets to use the inhaler.”

“What we found out is the bus heated well,” he said. “It kept the interior at normal temperature.”

“On January 27 th, we had 38 below,” he said. “The bus’s efficiency that day was 3.46 kilowatts per mile. So this fall, in August-September, we were running between 1.4 and 1.7 kilowatts per mile.”

“Maintenance savings will be close to $10,000 each year, with another $40,000 estimated in yearly fuel savings. The new buses will generate an estimated $150,000 each year in fleet renewal funds for the next 10 years for Albertville City Schools.”

“We strive for the very best for our students, drivers, faculty and community,” said Tuscumbia City Schools Superintendent Russ Tate. “We are thrilled to be the first school system in Alabama to receive an electric school bus under the Clean School Bus Program.”

“Every time we fill up our tanks its around $5,000, and so we should be able to save significant money from this. And with the mileage range that these provide us, these [buses] provide us with over a hundred miles of travelable roads in one route, and that’s longer than any route that we have,” Tate said.

  • “Eileen Hahn started driving Lake Shore Central buses this school year. She said the electric buses, which look like the diesel ones from the outside, have better pickup than diesel coaches, some of the buttons are different, and the buses are quieter. 

“It’s extremely quiet, which I think also helps the children to be quiet because they can talk, rather than yell to each other,” she said.” 

  • With the redistribution of weight, Raymond said driving the electric buses is “a completely different animal.”

“The response is immediate, breaking and acceleration,” he said. “The bus still turns and handles (similarly). The acceleration is, for a school bus, unheard of.”

“Yeah, it’s got some pep,” Luthringer added. 

  • “West Grand School District calculated $3,633 in fuel savings and $1,796 in maintenance savings during the year it incorporated one electric bus into its fleet.” 
  • “Raphael has been impressed by how comfortable the cabin temperature is even on the coldest days. She observes, “you almost get instant heat in an ESB” whereas diesel-burning school buses “take a while for the heater to rev up and make the cabin comfortable.”” 
  • “Oddi estimates that a route operated by a diesel-burning school bus would cost about $22, while an equivalent route operated by an ESB would cost less than $4, delivering approximately $15,000 of cost savings per school bus each year.”  
  • Hunter has driven regular diesel buses, tractors, and big trucks, but the electric bus is his choice.

“The smoother ride, the quieter ride, I prefer it,” Hunter said.
